Game cover crops provide a wide range of opportunities for growers who want to provide habitat for game and farmland birds. Some crops supply feed alone, others offer just cover, whilst some provide both.
Choosing the correct crop at the planning stage is obviously very important. The current farming support system allows great flexibility as to where crops are sited, as well as what they consist of, and in some circumstances can create potential income through the various stewardship schemes. For the greatest flexibility, we recommend that wherever possible growers try to establish crops on land managed under the Single Payment Scheme.
Crops suitable for game can also be carefully chosen for growing under various options within the Environmental and Rural Stewardship Schemes.
